Biphasic MOA
SYSTANE® eye drops contain a unique gelling and lubricating polymer system formulated to adjust to each patient's individual tear film pH. This ensures optimum performance and provides enhanced relief for a patient's specific physiological needs.
The polymerizing protection of SYSTANE® is achieved through the interaction of soothing demulcents (polyethylene glycol 400 and propylene glycol), HP-Guar and the patient's own natural tears.
When the HP-Guar in SYSTANE® eye drops combines with certain elements found in the tears, a chemical reaction occurs. HP-Guar binds to the hydrophobic (water-repelling) corneal surface, forming a surface-anchored network with a gel-like consistency. By cross-linking with borate ions, HP-Guar helps keep the demulcent system (polyethylene glycol / propylene glycol) on the surface of the eye longer, providing long-lasting relief from the symptoms of dry eye.
At the same time, SYSTANE® also helps create an ocular shield, allowing for epithelial repair in a healthy and protected environment. The protection of SYSTANE® Lubricant Eye Drops provides long lasting relief and sustained comfort.
