What is Sjögren's Syndrome?

Sjögren's (“SHOW-grins”) Syndrome occurs when the body’s white blood cells mistakenly attack moisture-producing glands. This causes inflammation and a significant reduction in the quantity and quality of the moisture they produce.

Quick Facts:

  • Sjögren's affects as many as 4 million Americans, 90% of them women
  • Typical onset age is in the late 40s, but can strike at any age
  • It is one of the most common autoimmune disorders, but often goes unrecognized because its symptoms are frequently diagnosed and treated separately
  • The hallmark of Sjögren’s is severe dry eye, but symptoms can also include dry mouth, joint pain and fatigue
